Books for Kids

This video comes from I Eat Words Channels. Go like the video, in order to help their cause.
This means a lot to me, because I have lived at a hospital for weeks at a time. I have lost friends before I would like to, because of illnesses. One of the few things that has always been there for me is books. The other was my mom, who was as nervous as I was half of the time. For every year that I live, my mom and I donate as many books as I can afford to Seattle Children Hospital, which is why I am alive. Anyways, I hope you support Briti and Farrah's cause or your local hospitals.

Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting

Source: Bought
The missing dead call to Violet. They want to be found.
Violet can sense the echoes of those who've been murdered—and the matching imprint that clings to their killers. Only those closest to her know what she is capable of, but when she discovers the body of a young boy she also draws the attention of the FBI, threatening her entire way of life.
As Violet works to keep her morbid ability a secret, she unwittingly becomes the object of a dangerous obsession. Normally she'd turn to her best friend, Jay, except now that they are officially a couple, the rules of their relationship seem to have changed. And with Jay spending more and more time with his new friend Mike, Violet is left with too much time on her hands as she wonders where things went wrong. But when she fills the void by digging into Mike's tragic family history, she stumbles upon a dark truth that could put everyone in danger.

Desire of the Dead was just as amazing as The Body Finder. Violet is just as complusive and lovable as the first book. Jay is really caring and sweet in this book. I also lived that you learned more about her friends. I am really interested in what will happen now that the FBI knows about her and also who is exactly Rafeis The plot was just as intense with tons of romance, suspense, and action that it kept me immersed in this book. I like how the echos were more extreme and much more interesting. I can't wait to see what will come next in the series. Derting wrote another amazing book that I love and I am sure that other fans of The Body Finder will love too. I highly recommend that you read it.

Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

Source: Bought
In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees . . . .
Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.
Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.
As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?
Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

Clara was an interesting character, but for the first half of the book I didn't feel that I connected to her at all. I liked that she developed into a likable heroine. Christian seemed a bit too perfect to be true and that really annoyed me at times. Tucker on the other hand was really sweet and funny. Her family brought something to this book and I couldn't help hating her mom at times. The plot was very exciting at times, but the middle seemed to drag on forever and the pacing was messed up. The ending was really exciting and left me with a lot of questions and I can't wait to learn more about what is happening. I think that the angels were very unique in Unearthly. Hand created amazing characters that are one of a kind and a premise that is exciting and I am sure will continue to develop. Hand brings Unearthly to fans of Paranormal Romance, which I am sure many will love.

The Kid Table by Andrea Seigel

Source: Publisher
Ingrid Bell and her five teenage cousins are such a close-knit group that they don't really mind sitting at the kid table—even if they have to share it with a four-year-old. But then Brianne, the oldest cousin, lands a seat at the adult table and leaves her cousins shocked and confused. What does it take to graduate from the kid table?
Over the course of five family events, Ingrid chronicles the coming-of-age of her generation. Her cousins each grapple with growing pains, but it is Ingrid who truly struggles as she considers what it means to grow up. When first love comes in the form of first betrayal (he's Brianne's boyfriend), Ingrid is forced to question her own personality and how she fits into her family. The cousins each take their own path toward graduating into adulthood—only to realize that maybe the kid table was where they wanted to be all along.
Almost a reverse coming-of-age, this touching and hilariously funny novel will appeal to any reader who has sat at the kid table . . . or is still sitting there!
This book was really crazy, because it focused on one really large family that has a lot of different personalities, but after awhile I found it to be a very funny book. Ingrid's voice was very distinct, and one thing that I liked about her. I didn't like that she didn't have any plans after high school. I also like Dom, who was gay and wasn't sure excaltly how to tell people. Micah was also a very funny character. Brianne was really funny, when she tried to analysis people. Crickett's eating disorder was a bit random. Autumn and Katie reminded me of part of me. I remember sitting at the kid's table a lot when I was younger and it was fun. I can't imagine there still being a kid's table pass age 13, but I think that is part of what made this plot so funny at times. Sometimes, I got lost on what was happening in the book and had to reread the parts or look at the family tree. Overall, this was a cute and fun read that kept me entertained with all of the different characters.

Mad Love by Suzanne Selfors

Source: Publisher
When you're the daughter of the bestselling Queen of Romance, life should be pretty good. But 16-year-old Alice Amorous has been living a lie ever since her mother was secretly hospitalized for mental illness. After putting on a brave front for months, time is running out. The next book is overdue, and the Queen can't write it. Alice needs a story for her mother—and she needs one fast.
That's when she meets Errol, a strange boy who claims to be Cupid, who insists that Alice write about the greatest love story in history: his tragic relationship with Psyche. As Alice begins to hear Errol's voice in her head and see things she can't explain, she must face the truth—that she's either inherited her mother's madness, or Errol is for real.

Suzanne Selfors always brings some quirky and different twist to her books. Mad Love wasn't any different. This time Selfors brought Cupid and made him Errol, a swoon worthy, but very different boy, who seemed to have so much sorrow in his soul. His story of Psyche was sad, but explained who he was. This matched well with Alice, who while a teen, had to act like an adult really fast, because her mom who is bipolar. Bipolar runs in my family, so I like seeing how other people deal with it. The plot was interesting and kept me entertained. Selfors has created another cute and quick read with a unique twist that kept me entertained.

A Touch Mortal by Leah Clifford

Source: Publisher
Eden didn't expect Az.
Not his saunter down the beach toward her. Not his unbelievable pick-up line. Not the instant, undeniable connection. And not his wings.
Yeah.
So long, happily-ever-after.
Now trapped between life and death, cursed to spread chaos with her every touch, Eden could be the key in the eternal struggle between heaven and hell. All because she gave her heart to one of the Fallen, an angel cast out of heaven.
She may lose everything she ever had. She may be betrayed by those she loves most. But Eden will not be a pawn in anyone else's game. Her heart is her own.
And that's only the beginning of the end.

Eden wasn't your usual paranormal main character. She didn't think that Az was so awesome until he proved that he was. She was also very strong, sarcastic, independent, and kick ass, which I loved. The relationship between Az and Eden was very intense, because it started so fast and the banter was epic. I also liked that Eden didn't worship/idolize Az, like in a lot of books. Then there is also Gabe, who is upbeat and Kristen, who is obsessed with death. All of the characters in A Mortal Touch are all deeply flawed, which is well good, because it made them more relatable and likable.
The plot of A Touch Mortal is so crazy, but in a good way. I never knew what to expect from Clifford and after awhile I gave up on guessing what would happen next and just read the book. This is the most unpredictable books that I have read in a while. This book is full of so much originality, sure there are angels, but there are also Siders, which are teens that have committed suicide and their touch radiates the sadness that they have felt in that moment that they died. Heaven and Hell also play a lot in this myth. The world building was spectacular. Clifford was a stunning writer, whose debut definitely left a mark on me. I can't wait for the sequel of A Mortal Touch. If you want a unique and amazing read, then go buy A Mortal Touch and even if you don't, I highly recommend that you still buy it. You definitely won't regret reading this book.

Pretty Covers!

So Silver Bright by Lisa Mantchev
I loved the past two covers and book three is no different. The curtains or gorgeous as are the dress. I also love the fairies that are in it, like the past two books. I am so excited to read this book.Supernaturally by Kiersten White
This cover is gorgeous. It looks similar to how Paranormalcy looked, except a bit more creepy. The dress is gorgeous and I am the only one questioning if those flowers are dead.

Ekk, I can't wait for these two books. Now I am going back to collapsing.

Guest Post with J.R. Turner

Award-winning author J.R. Turner lives in Central Wisconsin with her husband and three children. She began writing in high school, and after a decade working as a commercial artist, started her first novel in 1999. Aside from crafts, camping and cooking, she loves holidays. A favorite is Halloween, a combination of spooky supernatural fun and chocolate. Visit her at http://www.jennifer-turner.com to learn more!
A Guide to Being DFF’s with a Ghost
1.Forgive the dead their wardrobe. They can’t help how they look and a makeover only happens after they move on. To be friends with someone who died a hundred years ago, you’ll have to accept them as they are.
2. Be prepared to share their death. There are few more intimate ways to get to know someone else than by reliving their murder. Don’t fight against this special bonding moment—instead go with the flow and hope you survive.
3. Bad skin is nothing like the odor of decay and the gooey mush that often accompanies a century-old murdered ghost. Be polite and don’t stare.
4. Parents are unable to see these ghostly apparitions, so if one decides to pay a visit by showing up in your refrigerator, don’t panic. Simply hold the door open and pretend to look for orange juice.
5. Communication is key. If you are unable to understand the often messed up message the dead are seeking to send you, consult your local medium. Often they can translate the moans, groans, and chain-rattling attempts the deceased friend is using to communicate with you.
6. Above all else, be accepting and patient. Ghosts are often exhausted by an effort to hang out with you. If they’re a bit too tired to hit the mall or see a movie, never fear, they’re always great fun at Halloween.
Kaylee Hensler might have not ended up convicted of grave robbery and arson had she followed the six rules above. As it was, she freaked out and ended up in court, sentenced to a reformatory for wayward girls. In Detour 2 Death, the third book in the Extreme Hauntings series, she’ll learn that not all dead things want to be Total DFF’s: Dead Friends Forever.
Thank you so much, Sarah, for hosting me on my blog tour. I’m so excited to see this book released and I really enjoyed this visit! Please offer one person, a winner drawn from those who comment, an electronic download of DFF: Dead Friends Forever. I’d be stoked to send the first book in a series out to them.

Friday Five that is full of excitement...

1. Earlier this week, I passed 900 post for this blog, which is more then excitement.
2. I have FOUR more classes until I am done with High School and my number one choice has everything for my application. I am a bit nervous.
3. My sister is due in 18 days! Her baby shower was gorgeous and I don't think that she will need to buy clothes for a while...
4. I have been on a diet for a month and I have lost 15lbs. I am so happy and I only went over my calorie count once for my sister's baby shower, beacause of the cake. Oh well, my younger sister and I have been walking everyday even in the rain...
5. I got in Western Washington University!

Vixen by Jillian Larkin

Source: Bought
Jazz . . . Booze . . . Boys . . . It’s a dangerous combination.
Every girl wants what she can’t have. Seventeen-year-old Gloria Carmody wants the flapper lifestyle—and the bobbed hair, cigarettes, and music-filled nights that go with it. Now that she’s engaged to Sebastian Grey, scion of one of Chicago’s most powerful families, Gloria’s party days are over before they’ve even begun . . . or are they?
Clara Knowles, Gloria’s goody-two-shoes cousin, has arrived to make sure the high-society wedding comes off without a hitch—but Clara isn’t as lily-white as she appears. Seems she has some dirty little secrets of her own that she’ll do anything to keep hidden. . . .
Lorraine Dyer, Gloria’s social-climbing best friend, is tired of living in Gloria’s shadow. When Lorraine’s envy spills over into desperate spite, no one is safe. And someone’s going to be very sorry. . . .
From debut author Jillian Larkin, VIXEN is the first novel in the sexy, dangerous, and ridiculously romantic new series set in the Roaring Twenties . . . when anything goes.

Gloria wasn't your usual rich girl. She didn't care for the debutante parties or her engagement to the biggest bachelor in all of Chicago. She wants to become a singer for a speakeasy and she'll make it happen. She became a really dynamic character at the end. Clara is running from the past and I really liked that she was trying to redeem herself. Lorraine was cliche and really annoyed me a lot. She was jealous of what Gloria and Clara had and kept on trying to sabotage them. I also enjoyed Jerome and how he had dreams about life. Marcus was also such amazing guy that really cared for Clara and Gloria. Sebastian was a creeper and I really didn't like him.
The plot of Vixen was amazing. I fell in love with this book from the very beginning. I seriously love the 1920's more then you can even imagine. The plot drew me in from the very beginning and it developed into such an amazing story that I loved. This story was really original, because it brought something new to 1920's that was more then just flappers and booze. Larkin's writing was amazing, she brought drama and a certain degree of elegance to Vixen. I can't wait for the next book to come out. I recommend this book to fans of The Luxe series or historical fiction in general.

Pink by Lili Wilkinson

Source: Publisher
Ava has a secret. She is tired of her ultracool attitude, ultra-radical politics, and ultrablack clothing. She's ready to try something new—she's even ready to be someone new. Someone who fits in, someone with a gorgeous boyfriend, someone who wears pink.
Transferring to Billy Hughes School for Academic Excellence is the perfect chance to try on a new identity. But just in case things don't work out, Ava is hiding her new interests from her parents, and especially from her old girlfriend.
Secrets have a way of being hard to keep, though, and Ava finds that changing herself is more complicated than changing her wardrobe. Even getting involved in the school musical raises issues she never imagined. As she faces surprising choices and unforeseen consequences, Ava wonders if she will ever figure out who she really wants to be.
Humor, heart, and the joys of drama—on- and offstage—combine in Ava's delight-fully colorful journey of self-discovery.

I loved Pink from the very beginning, because who doesn't try to live up to other's expectation even when it doesn't seem right to you. Ava was a compassionate, funny, and confused girl that wasn't sure exactly who she was or what she wanted to do. So she reinvents herself and goes to a new school. Ava's journey towards discovery was enthralling and exciting. I was immediately sucked into Ava's life. Her (ex)-girlfriend Chloe was so negative and I couldn't help hating her every second. The Screws were amazing and made me laugh so much. I particularly love Sam and how he continued to challenge Ava. The plot of Pink was epic. I wasn't exactly sure what would happen next and Wilkinson kept me guessing every other second. The history of the color of pink was also a fun part. I also think that everyone can relate to not knowing exactly who they are. Wilkinson's writing was clever and beautiful in how she made the characters and the plot develop, which made it both unique and exciting. I can't wait for more books from Wilkinson, her debut book in the US was honest, witty, and raw contemporary narrative. This book is a must read and definitely a new favorite.

In My Mailbox (Week of February 13th)

For Review:
I got an awesome package that looked like this.
And the inside was all pretty and came with pink confetti, chocolate sunflower seeds, a pretty postcard.
Lastly, it had Wither by Lauren Destefano:

What if you knew exactly when you would die?
Thanks to modern science, every human being has become a ticking genetic time bomb—males only live to age twenty-five, and females only live to age twenty. In this bleak landscape, young girls are kidnapped and forced into polygamous marriages to keep the population from dying out.
When sixteen-year-old Rhine Ellery is taken by the Gatherers to become a bride, she enters a world of wealth and privilege. Despite her husband Linden's genuine love for her, and a tenuous trust among her sister wives, Rhine has one purpose: to escape—to find her twin brother and go home.
But Rhine has more to contend with than losing her freedom. Linden's eccentric father is bent on finding an antidote to the genetic virus that is getting closer to taking his son, even if it means collecting corpses in order to test his experiments. With the help of Gabriel, a servant Rhine is growing dangerously attracted to, Rhine attempts to break free, in the limted time she has left.

I have already read this book and wow! Very awesome package!

The Ghost and The Goth by Stacey Kade
Alona Dare–Senior in high school, co-captain of the cheerleading squad, Homecoming Queen three years in a row, voted most likely to marry a movie star… and newly dead.
I’m the girl you hated in high school. Is it my fault I was born with it all-good looks, silky blond hair, a hot bod, and a keen sense of what everyone else should not be wearing? But my life isn’t perfect, especially since I died. Run over by a bus of band geeks—is there anything more humiliating? As it turns out, yes—watching your boyfriend and friends move on with life, only days after your funeral. And you wouldn’t believe what they’re saying about me now that they think I can’t hear them. To top it off, I’m starting to disappear, flickering in and out of existence. I don’t know where I go when I’m gone, but it’s not good. Where is that freaking white light already?
Will Killian–Senior in high school, outcast, dubbed “Will Kill” by the popular crowd for the unearthly aura around him, voted most likely to rob a bank…and a ghost-talker.
I can see, hear, and touch the dead. Unfortunately, they can also see, hear and touch me. Yeah, because surviving high school isn’t hard enough already. I’ve done my best to hide my “gift.” After all, my dad, who shared my ability, killed himself because of it when I was fifteen. But lately, pretending to be normal has gotten a lot harder. A new ghost—an anonymous, seething cloud of negative energy with the capacity to throw me around—is pursuing me with a vengeance. My mom, who knows nothing about what I can do, is worrying about the increase in odd incidents, my shrink is tossing around terms like “temporary confinement for psychiatric evaluation,” and my principal, who thinks I’m a disruption and a faker, is searching for every way possible to get rid of me. How many weeks until graduation?

I bought this because I got Queen of the Dead a few weeks ago and I used it as a reason to buy this book. =)
Cryer's Cross by Lisa McMann
The community of Cryer’s Cross, Montana (population 212) is distraught when high school freshman Tiffany disappears without a trace. Already off-balance due to her OCD, 16-year-old Kendall is freaked out seeing Tiffany’s empty desk in the one-room school house, but somehow life goes on... until Kendall's boyfriend Nico also disappears, and also without a trace. Now the town is in a panic. Alone in her depression and with her OCD at an all-time high, Kendall notices something that connects Nico and Tiffany: they both sat at the same desk. She knows it's crazy, but Kendall finds herself drawn to the desk, dreaming of Nico and wondering if maybe she, too, will disappear...and whether that would be so bad. Then she begins receiving graffiti messages on the desk from someone who can only be Nico. Can he possibly be alive somewhere? Where is he? And how can Kendall help him? The only person who believes her is Jacian, the new guy she finds irritating...and attractive. As Kendall and Jacian grow closer, Kendall digs deeper into Nico's mysterious disappearance only to stumble upon some ugly—and deadly—local history. Kendall is about to find out just how far the townspeople will go to keep their secrets buried.
I went to Lisa McMann's signing and bought a finished copy to get signed. It was lovely meeting her and talking with her.

Cryer's Cross was a really enjoyable book. I didn't exactly get Kendall, because her OCD was such a major part of her and overshadowed a lot of the questions that I had. I didn't understand exactly why dancing was so important to her or exactly how much Nico meant to her. I liked Jacian, he was a really sweet character. The plot of this book was really creepy with the WE chapters that were scattered through out the book. I liked it a lot. McMann also made sure to keep what was happening till the end, which created more suspense. This book was really enjoyable and creepy enough to make me want more. I highly recommend this to fans of the Wake Series or the Devouring Series, because it was really creepy and exciting.

Jenna & Jonah's Fauxmance by Brendan Halpin and Emily Franklin

Source: Publisher
Fans of romance don't need to look any further than the fauxmance brewing between teen idols Charlie Tracker and Fielding Withers—known on their hit TV show as Jenna and Jonah, next-door neighbors flush with the excitement of first love. But it's their off-screen relationship that has helped cement their fame, as passionate fans follow their every PDA. They grace the covers of magazines week after week. Their fan club has chapters all over the country. The only problem is their off-screen romance is one big publicity stunt, and Charlie and Fielding can't stand to be in the same room. Still, it's a great gig, so even when the cameras stop rolling, the show must go on, and on, and on. . . .
Until the pesky paparazzi blow their cover, and Charlie and Fielding must disappear to weather the media storm. It's not until they're far off the grid of the Hollywood circuit that they realize that there's more to each of them than shiny hair and a winning smile.

Charlie was a likable character and so was Aaron and I liked the concept too. I just never believed that Charlie and Aaron were actually in love. I enjoyed the snarky back and forth banter that they had, but they were consantly hurting each other. The plot really sucked me in at the beginning, but after awhile it really annoyed me. The ending also seemed really cheesy. Overall this was a cute book that I enjoyed, but I didn't like all of the book.

serafina67 *urgently requires life* by Susie Day

Source: Bought
Serafina doesn't have a boyfriend, doesn't have a best friend, and her parents fight all the time. But she does have a shiny new laptop (a present from her guilt-ridden and therefore overly generous dad). And with the shiny new laptop comes a shiny new identity: serafina67, blogging (and kissing) addict.
But in a year when the secrets turn serious, and friends and parents might not be what they seem, is spilling your whole life on the Internet such a bright idea? It might just lead to tears, trouble, hilarious online adventures and a fresh new take on writing—-a novel told as a blog.

Internet based books are hit or missed for me. Serafina was luckily amazing. I loved the main character's blog. She was easy to relate to and I loved all of the English references(Mostly Doctor Who!). Patch was such a dreamy boy and I love him. Serafina's other friends were epic and I know people that are just like them. The plot in the blog was easy to follow and was a sweet read. Day is an amazing author and I can't wait to read more from her. I highly recommend that you read this book! It is a cute and funny read that left me wanting more.

Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly

Source: Publisher
BROOKLYN: Andi Alpers is on the edge. She’s angry at her father for leaving, angry at her mother for not being able to cope, and heartbroken by the loss of her younger brother, Truman. Rage and grief are destroying her. And she’s about to be expelled from Brooklyn Heights’ most prestigious private school when her father intervenes. Now Andi must accompany him to Paris for winter break.
PARIS: Alexandrine Paradis lived over two centuries ago. She dreamed of making her mark on the Paris stage, but a fateful encounter with a doomed prince of France cast her in a tragic role she didn’t want—and couldn’t escape.
Two girls, two centuries apart. One never knowing the other. But when Andi finds Alexandrine’s diary, she recognizes something in her words and is moved to the point of obsession. There’s comfort and distraction for Andi in the journal’s antique pages—until, on a midnight journey through the catacombs of Paris, Alexandrine’s words transcend paper and time, and the past becomes suddenly, terrifyingly present.
Jennifer Donnelly, author of the award-winning novel A Northern Light, artfully weaves two girls’ stories into one unforgettable account of life, loss, and enduring love. Revolution spans centuries and vividly depicts the eternal struggles of the human heart.

This book was wow! Andi's voice was heartbreaking, raw, and jaded, both at the world and herself. While Alex's voice was compelling, caring, and just as heartbreaking. Both of these character left such a mark of me that I had a hard time leaving this book. Their stories were beautiful and I think that is is mostly due to Donnelly's writing, which was elegant and everything that I have ever wanted from a book. Just like Andi did, I became obsessed with Alex's story and wanted more. I flipped forward a few times to see just when I could expect the next entry. I will say that it took me a week to finish this book, but I think that I was really trying to savour every moment of the beautiful plot. The concept of this book isn't super original, there are a lot of book with diaries or letters in them, but the way that it is written is gorgeous. This book instantly became one of my favorite books ever, it is part cotempary and part historical fiction that captured me. Donnelly displays that she is trully a skilled writer with Revolution. I can't wait to read more from her. I highly recommend that you read this book now, it is realistic and clever. Seriously, one of the best books that I have ever read!

Waiting on Wednesday (89)

Title: Beauty Queens
Author: Libba Bray
Publisher: Scholastic
Date: May 24th, 2011
From bestselling, Printz Award-winning author Libba Bray, the story of a plane of beauty pageant contestants that crashes on a desert island.
Teen beauty queens. A "Lost"-like island. Mysteries and dangers. No access to emall. And the spirit of fierce, feral competition that lives underground in girls, a savage brutality that can only be revealed by a journey into the heart of non-exfoliated darkness. Oh, the horror, the horror! Only funnier. With evening gowns. And a body count.

This book sound so epic! Plus I love the cover and Libba Bray is fab at writing!
